Our law firm has settled thousands of Maryland auto accident claims. To get the maximum settlment value for an accident claim, looking for a lawyer who can get you a quick settlement is the wrong answer. Because if a case can be settled in just a few weeks, it is either (1) not a big case, or (2) you are not getting anything resembling a good settlement.
Why? For an insurance company to properly evaluate a car accident settlement, the insurance company must have all of your medical bills and records to evaluate the claim. If there is a permanent injury, the insurance company is also going to need to have medical documentation – typically but not always from a treating doctor – that the injury is permanent or that future medical care for the injury may be required. Any lost wages have to be properly documented as well. None of this can be done with a quick settlement.
What you really want is a car accident lawyer who you feel confident has the skills, reputation, and willingness to (1) fight to get you the most money possible, and (2) will try to get your case settled as quickly as possible without compromising the value of your case.
Another important thing to remember is that who your lawyer is matters to the insurance companies when they decide how much to offer. The lawyer promising a fast settlement probably does not try a lot of car accident cases. There are many car accident lawyers that never go to trial. They take cases where they can get a settlement offer and settle the vast majority if not all of their cases. But insurance companies know who files lawsuits and who is willing to take their clients case to trial. This matters to you if you want maximize how much money you get for your case because even if you are sure you are going to settle before filing a lawsuit, you want an accident lawyer the insurance companies think may be willing to file a lawsuit. In other words, the insurance company does not know who is bluffing and who is not. But if your lawyers are always bluffing in every case, the insurance company does know that.

Realistically, it also matters which county is appropriate for your lawsuit. Assuming your case is large enough for a jury trial, If you are in Baltimore City or Prince George’s County, you have a greater likelihood of getting a reasonable offer than if you are in, for example, Howard County or Wicomico County (Salisbury) because insurance companies realize that counties differ in how much a jury will award – even for the same case.
